Frequently Asked Questions:

Why Community Groups?

As we grow larger in worship attendance it is critical that we grow smaller through community groups.  Community groups are the key to sustained spiritual growth.  Success at Westlake is defined by how effectively we move people from our large group on Sunday morning into community groups.  Practically speaking, there will never be a way for the staff or board to personally minister to everyone who attends our church.  Being connected to a group allows us to effectively minister to everyone.

Community groups are a biblical way to grow spiritually.  Check out what Luke wrote about the early church in the book of Acts.

"Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church-about 3,000 in all.  They joined with the other believers and devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, sharing in the Lord's Supper and in prayer.

And all the believers met together constantly and shared everything they had.  They sold their possessions and shared the proceeds with those in need.  They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord's Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity-all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people.  And each day the Lord added to their group those who were being saved." Acts 2: 41, 42, 44-47

What are Community Groups?
Community groups are gatherings of 8-20 people who meet in homes and at the church to connect with God through Bible study, connect with others through relationships, and connect with the world through serving.

What is the structure of the Community Group ministry?
Each year is broken into trimesters.  We have 3 promotion months throughout the year when all of our groups are promoted and sign-ups take place.  Every person in the church is encouraged to sign up for a group during these months.  During the winter/spring and summer trimesters group leaders choose the curriculum to be studied from an approved curriculum list.  This ensures that a variety of topics and studies are offered.  Every year during the fall trimester the entire church journeys together on a 6-10 week study where the Sunday morning messages connect with the weekly group discussion.

What is the reasoning behind the Community Group structure?
1)  This structure allows new people in our church the opportunity to get plugged into a new group within 3 months of first attending.  It is often daunting for a new person to try to jump into an existing group mid-stream.  Relationships have already been formed and inside jokes and stories already exist between group members.

2)  Having specific beginning and ending dates increases participation and increases potential group leaders.  When we ask people to commit to a group with no end in sight it is intimidating, unnatural, and unrealistic.  Offering beginning and ending dates gives people freedom and flexibility to make a commitment they know they can stick with.

3)  This structure lends itself to developing a broader sense of community and connectedness in the church family as we are continually given the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.

4)  This structure allows people to choose which group to be a part of based on the study that will best challenge them and meet their spiritual needs.

What kinds of groups are available?
Most of our groups are general multi-generational groups.  However, each trimester we also offer several men's, women's, and Senior adult groups.  We also offer a 3 week class called Welcome to Westlake for all new people to our Westlake family.  This class is offered 3 times throughout the year.

When do groups meet?
Groups meet at different times on most days of the week.  Several groups meet on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights at the church and are perfect for families with young children because children's ministry is available.  Some groups meet weekly, while others meet every other week or three times a month.  Scheduling is left up to the group leader and is based upon how many sessions are in the study or curriculum.

What happens in a typical group?
Group leaders determine the format for their group.  Most groups will include a time for fellowship (likely including food and drinks of some kind), Bible study which will be led by a DVD or group leader, and prayer time for group members.  Group members are responsible for purchasing any study guides necessary for the group.
